27/03/2023 This World Whiskey Day, we celebrate Bourbon as a symbol of American craftsmanship

Bourbon whiskey is arguably one of the biggest industries for the USA, in terms of tourism, economy, employment, and a product that brings national pride to all citizens.

From the Kentucky Bourbon Trail to the legendary figures associated with the spirit, such as Daniel Boone and Abraham Lincoln, bourbon has played a significant role in shaping the American story. Bourbon is also a major export for the United States, and it generates billions of dollars in revenue and creates thousands of jobs.

This whiskey came by fairly recently when compared to Scotch or Irish whiskey, however, it quickly became distinct and authentic to the American taste.

How to taste and appreciate Kentucky bourbon: A beginner's guide

Tasting and appreciating Kentucky bourbon can be a fun and rewarding experience. Here are some tips for beginners to help you get started:

1) Choose a bourbon: When selecting a bourbon, consider the brand, age, proof, and flavor profile. You may want to start with a well-known bourbon brand, like Maker's Mark, Wild Turkey, or Jim Beam.

2) Pour the bourbon: Pour a small amount of bourbon into a glass, about 1-2 ounces, and take a moment to appreciate the color and clarity of the liquid.

3) Smell the bourbon: Before you taste the bourbon, take a moment to smell it. Swirl the glass to release the aromas and breathe in the scent. Try to identify any notes of vanilla, caramel, oak, or other flavors.

4) Taste the bourbon: Take a small sip of the bourbon and let it roll around your mouth. Notice the flavors, the sweetness, the spice, and the finish. Try to identify any flavors that you smelled in the aroma.

5) Add water: Add a few drops of water to the glass. This can help to open up the flavors and aromas of the bourbon.

6) Experiment: Try tasting different bourbons and comparing them to each other. You may want to try tasting bourbons of different ages, proofs, and flavor profiles. Experimenting can help you develop your palate and appreciation for bourbon.

The country’s top spirit buyers, master mixologists, and also Netflix’s Drink Masters will come together on May 21 to judge an array of local as well as international spirits on the basis of Quality, Value, and Packaging. They will use more nuanced techniques than the ones mentioned above, developed through their years of experience in the field.
