Siwani Spirits is not simply a brand—it’s a story passed down through generations, one sip at a time. Rooted in Black American traditions of resilience, craft, and community, the brand weaves together family legacies from Washington, DC to the Lowcountry of South Carolina. Siwani is a name that carries deep personal meaning, but more importantly, it represents a tribute to a lineage of makers, dreamers, and innovators whose lives were as rich in character as the spirits they quietly crafted.
At the heart of Siwani’s origin is Sidney James Swann, the founder’s maternal great-grandfather. Known in his community as a skilled barber, Sidney held a second, quieter identity—one he pursued not in the shop, but in the basement of his home on E Street in Washington, DC. There, surrounded by the earthy scent of grain and spice, he operated his own still, carefully distilling spirits with a dedication to quality that rivaled his talent for the perfect shave. It was more than a hobby—it was an expression of art, a nod to legacy, and a subtle celebration of independence.
But the story of craft goes even further back. Sidney’s mother, Emma, was a force in her own right. Living in what is now the La Plata area of southern Maryland, Emma ran a biergarten-cum-speakeasy—long before either term would gain trendy status. Her space was more than a watering hole; it was a sanctuary for community, conversation, and culture. Patrons came for the drink, but stayed for the warmth, the stories, the laughter. Emma’s establishment wasn’t just about pouring drinks—it was about pouring into people.
That legacy of hospitality, craftsmanship, and cultural celebration is what inspired Siwani Spirits. Even the brand’s name—Siwani, meaning “swan” in Yoruba—is a carefully chosen nod to the Swann family name and a larger African diasporic heritage. The swan, a symbol of elegance and transformation, reflects the brand’s ethos: graceful in presentation, powerful in essence.
Siwani’s aesthetic reflects this balance of tradition and refinement. A black-and-white photograph of Sidney Swann from the 1920s is at the center of the brand’s visual storytelling. His confident gaze, tailored suit, and unmistakable poise speak volumes about the era and the man. That image, timeless in its quiet power, captures not just a person but a cultural moment—a snapshot of Black excellence in a time that often tried to obscure it.
The sophistication that defined Sidney’s generation continues through another family pillar: Thomas “Clue” Gregory, the founder’s paternal grandfather. If Sidney was the quiet craftsman, Clue was the bold builder. Known for his stylish hats and sharp suits, Clue was as much a spirit maker as he was a master of reinvention. He produced wine and spirits from his home, including a locally loved mulberry wine, while also raising hogs, cultivating sugar cane, and building his own home with his bare hands.

Clue’s talents weren’t limited to manual labor or style. He had an eye on the future, gifting his granddaughter her first computer in the early 1990s—a prescient act of encouragement when few families had access to such technology. It was a symbol of empowerment, a reminder that heritage and progress need not be at odds.
Born of the Geechee culture and Lowcountry traditions of Georgia and South Carolina, Clue carried with him the rhythms of the South. His migration to Florida mirrored that of so many Black families who moved in search of opportunity but carried their roots with them in song, speech, and flavor. His story—one of self-determination, entrepreneurship, and fierce love for family—forms the other half of the Siwani legacy.
Every bottle of Siwani Spirits reflects this dual lineage: the quiet sophistication of Sidney and the industrious boldness of Clue. It’s a balance of elegance and earthiness, of tradition and innovation. It’s not about chasing trends, but about honoring what has always worked—community-centered craftsmanship, intentionality, and an aesthetic that feels as good as it looks.
Siwani Spirits is more than a beverage. It is a vehicle for storytelling, for remembering, for gathering. Whether sipped in celebration or contemplation, each pour invites people to be part of something larger—a tapestry woven from family recipes, historical migration, and a distinctly Black American experience.
In an industry often marked by mass production and disconnection, Siwani stands apart with a mission rooted in legacy and love. Every aspect of the brand—from the spirits themselves to the spaces they envision creating—serves one purpose: to honor the past while building something meaningful for the future.
Because some stories are too good not to share—and some spirits are too soulful not to savor.
